One common question many patients ask at the Spa and Laser Center is, “How long do lip fillers last?” Several factors influence the longevity of lip fillers, including the type of filler used, how quickly the body metabolizes the filler, and how the body reacts to lip filler treatment. If you’ve already done a lip filler and it’s been over 6 months since your last appointment, more filler may be needed. However, if you are planning a lip filler and want detailed insights about its longevity, read this post!

What Are Lip Fillers?
Lip fillers are injections designed to enhance the volume of lips. They fall under the category of dermal fillers and primarily consist of synthetic hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance naturally found in the body. The most popular lip filler brands are Juvederm®, Restylane®, and Perlane®.
The Different Types of Lip Fillers
You can choose among the following lip fillers to enhance the beauty of your lips.
Hyaluronic Acid Fillers
Hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Juvederm and Restylane, are the most prevalent choices for lip augmentation. They yield natural-looking results and carry a reduced risk of allergic reactions since hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally present in the body.
Collagen Fillers
Collagen fillers were previously the preferred method for lip enhancement but have largely been supplanted by hyaluronic acid fillers due to their shorter duration and increased likelihood of allergic responses.
Fat Injections
Fat injections involve extracting fat from another body area and injecting it into the lips. Although this technique can provide longer-lasting effects, it requires a more invasive procedure and a longer recovery.
How Long Do Lip Fillers Last?
At the Spa and Laser Center, we offer a variety of lip fillers, from the popular dermal filler Juvederm, known for its ability to offer a beautiful pout, to specialized formulations like Restylane and Kybella for subtle refinements. The longevity of each filler depends on its type and many other factors. But the standards are:
- Hyaluronic Acid Lip Filler – Lasts 12 to 24 months.
- Juvederm® Lip Filler – Lasts 6 to 12 months.
- Juvederm® VolumeTM XC – Lasts 8 to 12 months.
- Restylane® Lip Filler – Lasts 6 to 12 months.
Factors Affecting the Lip Filler Duration
The following factors may influence the lip filler duration.
- Lip filler duration
The injector’s skill and technique can influence how well the filler integrates with the tissue and its overall durability. - Metabolism
Individual metabolic rates can affect how quickly the body breaks down the filler material. Faster metabolism may lead to shorter-lasting results. - Lifestyle Factors
Habits such as smoking, sun exposure, and diet can impact filler longevity. Smoking can accelerate the breakdown of fillers, while sun exposure can degrade hyaluronic acid. - Area Treated
The injection location plays a role; areas with more movement (like the lips) may experience faster filler absorption than static areas. - Amount of Filler Used
Larger filler volumes may last longer than smaller amounts, providing more material for the body to break down over time.

Who is the Right Candidate for Lip Fillers?
The right candidate for lip filler procedures typically includes individuals who meet the following criteria:
- Age: Candidates should be at least 22, as lip fillers are intended for adults.
- Health Status: Ideal candidates should be in good overall health, with no history of severe allergies or adverse reactions to dermal fillers, particularly lidocaine, which is often included in the formulation.
- Aesthetic Goals: Those seeking to enhance lip volume, improve lip symmetry, or reduce fine lines around the mouth are suitable candidates. A clear understanding of desired outcomes is essential.
- Realistic Expectations: Candidates should have realistic expectations regarding the results and longevity of the treatment, recognizing that fillers are temporary solutions requiring maintenance.
- No Contraindications: To get lip filler in Virginia Beach or any other location, you must not be pregnant, breastfeeding, or suffering from skin conditions and bleeding disorders.
What Happens During a Lip Filler Procedure?
During a lip filler procedure, your healthcare provider will first apply a topical anesthetic to numb your lips, ensuring a comfortable experience. This anesthetic typically contains benzocaine, lidocaine, and tetracaine (BLT) and takes about 15 to 30 minutes to take effect. If you have an allergy to BLT, a nerve block injection may be used instead.
Once your lips are numb, the provider will use a thin needle to inject the filler into various areas of your lips, including the vermillion border, Cupid’s bow, and oral commissures. While you shouldn’t feel pain, you may experience a slight pinching sensation and watery eyes. On average, about 1 milliliter (mL) of filler is injected, roughly one-fifth of a teaspoon, with the needle penetrating no deeper than 2.5 millimeters (mm).
An ice pack may be applied during the procedure to minimize swelling and bruising. Depending on individual needs and treatment specifics, the process can take 30 minutes to two hours.
