Thanks to new technology, you no longer need to go under the knife to get rid of stubborn fat. While in the past, you would have to undergo liposuction to get rid of the extra fat in your belly, thighs, hips or arms, you can now achieve similar results with pain-free, noninvasive treatments.

Body contouring treatments freeze and destroy fat cells to help you achieve the smoother, trimmer appearance you desire. Before you choose a body contouring treatment, you should know these facts:

You Can Freeze or Heat Fat Away
All body contouring treatments work by permanently destroying fat cells, often around the hips, thighs, stomach, bra strap or arms. They use one of two methods:
  • - CoolSculpting uses cold to freeze fat cells
  • - SculpSure uses laser to heat fat cells
Both treatment types are noninvasive and designed to be as painless as possible, though you may experience some discomfort like pinching, intense warmth or intense cold. Both methods are FDA approved and safe. They both may cause minor side effects like redness or tenderness in the treatment area.

While both procedures result in about 20 to 30 percent fat loss in the treatment area, it’s important to remember that they are not intended for major fat loss. They work best for people with a BMI below 30 who have spots of stubborn fat they cannot get rid of with exercise and/or dieting. They can help people who have less than 20 pounds left to lose before reaching their goal weight.

Treatment is Fast--But Results Are Slower
Each session of CoolSculpting takes about an hour. Sculpsure treatments take about 25 minutes each. With both types of treatment, you can return to work, workouts and your everyday life immediately.

However, it may be a few weeks to months before you see your final results. That’s because it takes some time for your body to clear destroyed fat cells out. After you see your results, you may want additional treatments. It’s important to talk to your doctor about if these treatments will be beneficial to you and to ensure you have waited long enough to see your results.

Results are permanent. However, if you gain weight, you may lose the contoured appearance. It is best to maintain your weight to maintain your results.

The Cost of Contouring
Contouring costs far less than liposuction, but is still a medical procedure. CoolSculpting often costs around $2250 per session while SculpSure costs around $1900 per session. However, costs can vary widely depending on where you live and what type of provider you see.

Always be wary of “deals” on these procedures. If the cost is way below average, the provider may be untrustworthy. You should always have these procedures at a medical spa run by a board-certified physician and well-trained staff.
