Botox is a treatment often used to reduce signs of aging on the face and neck; however, recent studies have shown that botox can be used in various treatments, including the treatment of TMD. If you are suffering from symptoms of TMD and want to find an easy alternative treatment method, The Spa and Laser Center offers botox injections in Virginia Beach to treat TMJ. Learn more about how botox can help.

Using Botox for TMJ

TMD, or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, is a disorder that causes tension and pain in the lower or upper jaw bone. Symptoms of this disorder include:
  • Sore cheeks and jaw
  • Swelling in your face
  • Facial pain
  • Pain around your neck and ears
  • Clicking noises when opening mouth
  • Headaches/Migraines
  • Clenching teeth
  • Grinding teeth
  • Ringing in your ears
  • Neck and/or Shoulder pain
Botox is a neurotoxin protein injected into specific areas of the face to temporarily paralyze and relax the muscles. Because TMJ is primarily caused by the tightening and clenching of the jaw muscles, relaxing these muscles can decrease the pain and symptoms associated with it.

The Procedure

Botox for TMD is a nonsurgical, outpatient procedure that takes 10-30 minutes to complete. Depending on the severity of your symptoms and the type of symptoms, your healthcare professional will formulate a plan of which areas to inject and the amount of botox injected into each area. For TMD, these areas will likely be the jaw, temples, and forehead. Before the injection, your healthcare professional will likely apply numbing cream or ice to make the injection less painful. After the procedure, many patients feel relief from the symptoms as soon as 24 hours after the injections.

Is Botox Treatment for TMJ Safe?

Botox treatment for TMJ is widely considered to be a safe alternative to other, more invasive treatments. In most cases, side effects are minimal, including
  • pain/discomfort
  • redness/bruising at the injection site
  • muscle weakness
  • nausea
However, many believe that the benefits outweigh the risks, and botox for TMD is considered relatively safe.

Effectiveness of Botox for TMJ

Currently, botox is not an FDA-approved treatment for TMJ; however, many studies demonstrate the effectiveness of this treatment. For example, in a clinical trialperformed in 2012, physicians found that “there was a significant decrease of pain, an increased mouth opening, and [that] seventy percent of the patients felt less muscle tenderness.” In conjunction withother trials, this trial has demonstrated that botox is an effective treatment for TMJ, even if the FDA does not recognize it.
